Compact railway‑side garden packed with unusual plants, raised beds and greenhouses, created beside a historic level crossing keeper’s cottage.
The Crossing House Garden is a distinctive small garden located beside the King’s Cross–Cambridge railway line in Shepreth. Established around a former level crossing keeper’s house dating from the mid‑19th century, the garden has been carefully developed since the late 1950s after the crossing became automated and the property passed into private ownership.
Despite occupying just over a quarter of an acre, the garden is densely planted and richly varied. Raised beds, many originally constructed from railway sleepers, allow for a wide range of plants to be grown, alongside ponds, alpine displays and greenhouses filled with specialist collections. The result is an unexpectedly lush and intricate space, known for its creativity, plant diversity and close relationship with the adjacent railway.
