World Rivers Day: Discovering the Waterways of the Cam Valley

Sunday 27 September is World Rivers Day, a chance to celebrate the rivers and streams that enrich our landscapes, support wildlife and connect our communities.
The Cam Valley is named after one of the region’s most treasured waterways: the River Cam. Flowing through South Cambridgeshire and into the heart of Cambridge, the river has shaped the landscape, influenced local history and provided a vital habitat for wildlife for centuries.
Along the Cam Valley rail lines, rivers, streams and wetlands are never far away. From the River Cam itself to chalk streams, village brooks and wetland habitats, these waterways support a rich variety of plants and animals while providing beautiful spaces for people to enjoy.
One of the great things about travelling by train is the opportunity it provides to access nature sustainably. Many stations in the Cam Valley offer easy access to riverside walks, nature reserves and green spaces. Whether it’s exploring the riverside paths around Cambridge, enjoying the countryside near Shepreth, discovering the wildlife-rich landscapes around Foxton and Meldreth, or the water meadows near Whittlesford, there are plenty of opportunities to connect with nature without using a car.
At Cam Valley Community Rail Partnership, we are passionate about helping people discover the wonderful landscapes on their doorstep. Through station adoption, biodiversity projects, community planting schemes and walking initiatives, we work with local communities to care for and celebrate the natural environment alongside the railway.
World Rivers Day is also an opportunity to reflect on the challenges facing our waterways. Pollution, habitat loss and climate change all place pressure on the ecosystems that rivers support. Simple actions such as reducing litter, joining local conservation activities and choosing sustainable travel options can all help protect these valuable environments.
This World Rivers Day, why not take the train and explore one of the many beautiful waterside locations in the Cam Valley? Whether you’re enjoying a peaceful walk, spotting wildlife or simply taking a moment to appreciate the landscape, you’ll be helping to celebrate the rivers that make our area so special.
